What is a Boost Converter and When Should You Use One?

In many electronics projects, you need more voltage than your power source provides. A boost converter (also called a step-up converter) solves this by converting a lower input voltage to a higher output voltage. What is a Boost Converter?

A boost converter is a DC-DC power supply that steps up voltage from a lower input to a higher output. How Does a Boost Converter Work?

A boost converter stores energy in an inductor when a switch is closed. When the switch opens, the inductor releases its stored energy, adding it to the input voltage to produce a higher output. A diode prevents backflow and a capacitor smooths the output. The duty cycle controls how much the voltage is boosted.
