The MAX30205 is a high-accuracy human body temperature sensor IC from Maxim Integrated (now Analog Devices), designed specifically for clinical and wearable health monitoring applications. It measures temperature with an accuracy of ±0.1°C over the clinically relevant range of 37°C to 39°C, making it suitable for fever detection, patient monitoring, and body-worn health devices.

The sensor outputs 16-bit temperature data over a standard I2C interface (up to 400kHz) and operates from a 1.7V to 3.6V supply, drawing only 600μA during continuous conversion. It includes a programmable OS/INT output for over-temperature alarm functionality, allowing threshold-based interrupt-driven designs without continuous MCU polling.

Key Specifications:

  • Part number: MAX30205
  • Manufacturer: Maxim Integrated / Analog Devices
  • Measurement: human body temperature
  • Accuracy: ±0.1°C (37°C–39°C range)
  • Resolution: 16-bit (0.00390625°C LSB)
  • Temperature range: 0°C to +50°C
  • Interface: I2C (up to 400kHz fast mode)
  • Supply voltage: 1.7V–3.6V

  • I2C address: configurable via A0, A1, A2 pins (up to 8 devices on one bus)
  • Package: TDFN-8 (2 × 3mm)

Key Features:

  • ±0.1°C accuracy (37°C–39°C) — clinical-grade precision for fever detection and body temperature monitoring
  • 16-bit resolution — fine-grained temperature readings for precise health data logging
  • I2C interface — easy integration with Arduino, ESP32, STM32, and Raspberry Pi
  • Programmable OS/INT alarm — interrupt-driven over-temperature detection without polling
  • Up to 8 devices on one I2C bus — multi-point body temperature sensing in a single design
  • Ultra-low supply voltage (1.7V) — compatible with coin cell and LiPo battery-powered wearables

Applications:

  • Wearable body temperature monitoring patches and bands
  • Clinical thermometers and patient monitoring systems
  • Fever detection and smart health devices
  • IoT health and wellness sensor nodes
  • Industrial temperature monitoring (0°C–50°C range)

Note: The MAX30205 is a bare SMD component in TDFN-8 package — requires SMD soldering or a breakout board for prototyping. For Arduino/ESP32 use, a MAX30205 breakout board with pull-up resistors on SDA/SCL is recommended. Use the Protocentral or Sparkfun MAX30205 Arduino library for quick integration. Place the sensor in direct skin contact or as close as possible to the body surface for accurate readings.
